Jazz Piano Pop Piano Improvisation

We are a music school which specializes in piano music. At Jazz Piano, we have a team of qualified and experienced instructors for the various music courses we offer. We believe in making the music learning experience enjoyable and yet enriching at the same time.

Jazz Piano is the ultimate level in piano playing. This is where a pianist will demonstrate a rare ability to play and express from his heart. Jazz pianists are highly regarded and sought after musicians. However, this form of music requires a high level of technical skill and musical theory knowledge (Jazz Harmony) only an accomplished stage pianist/instructor can teach. We have included in our pop piano course the required modules (improvisation and chord progression) to enable our pop piano students to progress further to Jazz Piano Studies.

From pop piano course, the student can also proceed to Lounge piano course. From here, he will be extensively taught all the required tunes and styles to take request from audiences. This course will cover all kinds of piano music heard in lounges - today's popular tunes to oldies, standards like moon river, new york new york to Chinese popular songs, waltz, light classic and jazz etc. Like the above, this course can only be taught by a qualified professional lounge pianist.

The student can take up ABRSM grade 1-8, ATCL and LTCL in our school. We are a dedicated piano school with very qualified instructors/performers including a champion of 1) Singapore and 2) South East Asia titles.

At Jazz Piano, we address common problems faced by students who rely on scores.

Common problems faced	Solutions (what you will learn)
- Fixed and monotonous left-hand accompaniment gets boring after a while	- Students will learn to use rhythm patterns such as Bossa Nova, Samba, Ragtime, Blues, Swing, Rock and Funk etc to provide variety in left-hand accompaniment.
- Simple and common chords in left-hand makes the music sound uninteresting and dull.	- Students will learn about chord progression, chord substitution and chord/bass enhancement which help to create a richer sound.
- Narrow left-hand keyboard range due to lack of knowledge	- Students will learn advanced bass work and chord inversion to increase left-hand keyboard range.
- One style-playing with little or no variation in melody line or theme	- Students will learn improvisation concepts such as: i) Harmony ii) Modes, Blues and Pentatonic scales iii) Rhythm fills-in iv) Freestyle right-hand soloing techniques v) Fingering technique for complex passages
- Empty passages in between sections (theme to chorus, chorus back to theme, etc) leads to anti-climax	- Students will learn formation of bridges using chords and improvisation to connect sections smoothly.
- Song sounds incomplete without proper introduction and ending	- Students will learn different forms of arrangement to provide proper introduction and ending to the song.
- Long holding notes (ie. tie notes) in melodic line makes music boring	- Students will learn how to add and create fill-ins.
- Expression of music is limited by heavy reliance on scores	- Students will learn how to play by ear without the need for scores. They will be taught: i) Understanding chord structures ii) Complete Scales (Major, Minor, Blues etc) iii) Harmony and voicings
